Phase Transitions in Boron Carbide
Phase transitions known to date have been identified due to significant changes of properties. The phase transition near the chemical composition B8C by clear change of the electronic structure. The endothermic temperature-dependent phase transition at 712 K according to the change of specific heat. The high-pressure phase transition at 33.2 GPa by the drastic change of optical appearance from opacity to transparency. These phase transitions affect IR- and Raman-active phonons and other solid-state properties. The phase transitions at B~8C and 712 K mean that a well-defined distorted structure is converted into another one. In the high-pressure phase transition, an apparently well-defined distorted structure changes into a highly ordered one. In all these cases, the distribution of polar C atoms in the icosahedra plays a crucial role.

The Structure and Evolution of Stars
Generally speaking, stars consist of three regimes: a core, an envelope, and an atmosphere from which the light emerges. Depending on the stellar mass and the evolutionary stage, cores and envelopes can be either radiative or convective. These regions define the (dominant) form of energy transport, but their physical definition and the interface between them represent a large source of uncertainty in stellar structure theory. Whilst stellar atmospheres are key messengers of astronomical information, they are also physical laboratories of radiation pressure leading to radiation-driven winds for high-mass stars and chemical mixing and transport phenomena such as radiative levitation in hot low-mass stars, which is where heavy elements with large cross-sections can gain momentum by absorbing photons from outflowing radiation.

Flash memory is an electronic, non-volatile information storage device that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. Ideally, the information stored in such a device should be preserved for long when the power is switched off. There are two flash memories designs at present: floating gate and charge trapping. Both of them work by storage of electrical charges in the space above the channel of the MOSFET. The charge storage volume of the flash cell, either poly-Si floating gate or charge trapping dielectric/dielectric stack is confined between blocking and tunnel oxides for electrical insulation from the gate electrode and Si substrate. Blocking and tunnelling oxides are important parts of the flash memory cells, as they affect retention, endurance and program/erase speed performance.

Two-dimensional quantum billiards are one of the most important paradigms for exploring the connection between quantum and classical worlds. Researchers are mainly focused on nonintegrable and irregular shapes to understand the quantum characteristics of chaotic billiards. The emergence of the scarred modes relevant to unstable periodic orbits (POs) is one intriguing finding in nonintegrable quantum billiards. On the other hand, stable POs are abundant in integrable billiards. The quantum wavefunctions associated with stable POs have been shown to play a key role in ballistic transport.
