Cancer Stem Cells
Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) is a subset of cancer cells with the ability to self-renew and to differentiate into non-CSC cancer cells within the tumor mass. The CSC field was shaped by great research done on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). HSCs are hierarchically arranged with HSCs being the founder cells that undergo asymmetric cell division giving rise to differentiated daughter cells and one quiescent stem cell with self-renewal abilities. CSCs are a subpopulation of cancer cells known to be resistant to therapy and cause metastasis. CSCs have been characterized in many cancers with data illustrating that CSCs display great abilities to self-renew, resist therapies due to enhanced epithelial to mesenchymal (EMT) properties, enhanced expression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) membrane drug transporters, activation of several survival signaling pathways and increased immune evasion as well as DNA repair mechanisms. CSCs also display great heterogeneity with the consequential lack of specific CSC markers presenting a great challenge to their targeting.

Balance Remains Impaired after Hip Arthroplasty
Hip arthroplasty (HA) is the end-stage intervention for patients affected by hip osteoarthritis (OA). It is the most common joint replacement procedure and the number of patients undergoing prosthetic implantation is progressively growing due to the ageing population. The evidence suggested that balance is impaired immediately after surgery and, 4–12 months after surgery, it becomes better than preoperatively, although without reaching the level of healthy subjects. A strong level of evidence was found for hip resurfacing resulting in better balance restoration than total HA (THA), and for strength and ROM exercises after surgery positively influencing balance.

Impact of Battery Degradation on Energy Management Systems
The increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) has been attributed to their low-carbon and environmentally friendly attributes. Given the depletion of fossil fuels and changes in climatic conditions due to air pollution, extensive research has been undertaken to develop EVs capable of matching or exceeding the performance of today’s internal combustion engines (ICEs). Transitioning from ICE vehicles to EVs can significantly reduce greenhouse gases over a vehicle’s lifetime. Across the different EV types, the widespread usage of batteries is due to their high power density and steady output voltage, making them excellent energy storage devices (ESD). The current downsides of battery-powered electric vehicles include long recharge times, the impact of additional strain on the grid, poor societal acceptance due to high initial costs, and a lack of adequate charging infrastructure. Even more problematic is their short driving range compared to standard ICE and fuel cell EVs. This situation is further compounded through battery degradation, which gradually reduces the capacity of a battery.
