Spark Streaming Backpressure for Data-Intensive Pipelines
A significant rise in the adoption of streaming applications has changed the decision-making processes in the last decade. This movement has led to the emergence of several Big Data technologies for in-memory processing, such as the systems Apache Storm, Spark, Heron, Samza, Flink, and others. Spark Streaming, a widespread open-source implementation, processes data-intensive applications that often require large amounts of memory. However, Spark Unified Memory Manager cannot properly manage sudden or intensive data surges and their related in-memory caching needs, resulting in performance and throughput degradation, high latency, a large number of garbage collection operations, out-of-memory issues,  and data loss. This work presents a comprehensive performance evaluation of Spark Streaming backpressure to investigate the hypothesis that it could support data-intensive pipelines under specific pressure requirements.  The results reveal that backpressure is suitable only for small and medium pipelines for stateless and stateful applications. Furthermore, it points out the Spark Streaming limitations that lead to in-memory-based issues for data-intensive pipelines and stateful applications. In addition, the work indicates potential solutions.

Epileptic seizures and deep learning
Chronic diseases are growing exponentially. Today, there are over 900 million individuals suffering with some chronic diseases around the world. For this reason, e-health systems are being developed to design a better quality of life for patients. For instance, we have systems for detection of epilepsy, monitoring of vital signs, control of diabetes, among others. Deep learning has being an important technique embedded in these systems to predict and sort the data without the need of a 24-hour monitoring specialist. However, by combining e-health systems and deep learning techniques also brings several challenges that need to be overcome.

Semantic Search and SemSime
This paper presents SemSime, a semantic similarity method for searching over a setof digital resources previously annotated by means of concepts from a weighted reference ontology. It is based on a frequency approach for weighting the ontology, and refines both the user request and the annotations of the digital resources with rating scores. Such scores are High, Medium, and Low and, in the user request, indicate the preferences assigned by the user to each of the concepts representing the searching criteria whereas, in the annotations of the digital resources, they represent the levels of quality associated with each concept in describing the resources. The experiment we have performed shows that SemSime outperforms the previous semantic search method SemSim.

Concept Extraction in Education
In the education field, foundational subject-related knowledge reflects concepts frequently expressed as single words or phrases. Educational concepts must be blended into learning and instructional practices; students’ inadequate conceptual understanding can cause them to forget information during the learning process. Similarly, instructors can enhance learning materials’ quality through a clear sense of subject-specific concepts. Extracting concepts from various subject areas based on extensive unstructured text is thus critical for instructors and students, especially to enrich teaching and learning activities.

IoT and cloud for e-health
The world population's life expectancy has gradually increased. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the life expectation will reach 90 years by 2030, and this quality of life is one of most important aging aspects. The academic and business communities are devoting many efforts to develop new applications that promote quality of life for this portion of the population; services, such as vital signs monitoring, fall detection systems, heart attacks, among others, are increasingly in evidence. Most of these e-health systems are focused on intelligent devices - Internet of Things (IoT). However, IoT by itself is not able to process, store and guarantee the quality of service of these services due to hardware capacity limitations. So, to mitigate this issue, IoT has two major allies in order to be able to provide e-health services with high availability and quality, fog and cloud computing. This paper presents in progress e-health architecture using IoT for data acquisition, fog for data pre-processing and short-term storage, and cloud for data processing, analyze and long-term storage. We also describe main challenges to provide an e-health application with high availability, high performance and accessibility, at low deployment and maintenance cost.
