Video Introduction

Jacques Cabaret began his career at the Veterinary School of Toulouse, where he studied veterinary medicine before completing a Master’s in Tropical Diseases and Nutrition. A brief period working with dairy cows soon revealed that his true passion was research. His journey began in Burkina Faso, where he worked on fattening zebu cattle using agricultural by-products. He then transitioned into the study of animal parasitology, and has devoted over 30 years to this field.

Cabaret focused on his PhD at the Agro-Veterinary Institute in Rabat, Morocco , studying lungworms and their transmission through snails as intermediate hosts in collaboration with the National History Museum of Paris. He was later recruited by the National Institute for Agronomic Research and Development (INRAE) at the Tours-Nouzilly station, where he initially worked on the ecology of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) and Fasciola. His research expanded into the systematics and population genetics of GIN, before shifting focus to the growing issue of anthelmintic resistance.

As his research progressed, Cabaret noticed a disconnect between researchers' recommendations and farmers' practices. This observation led him to explore the sociology of decision-making in animal health, collaborating with a sociologist at INRAE, a study he now leads independently. Seeking further intellectual stimulation, he earned a Master’s in the Philosophy of Science from Sorbonne University and began a PhD on animal diseases, focusing on their conceptual foundations and therapeutic consequences. Although the project was interrupted, he is determined to complete it in the future.

Now retired, Cabaret founded SantéSocioVéto, focusing on sociological studies of farmers' relationships with animals. He continues to publish papers and books in parasitology, sociology, and the philosophy of science, while serving as an Editorial Board Member of Animals.
