When people speak of Albrecht Classen, they often begin with his title: University Distinguished Professor of German Studies at the University of Arizona. Yet, titles alone cannot fully capture the importance of a scholar who has devoted his life to exploring Europe’s literary worlds from the period spanning 800 to 1600 CE.
Classen's passion for medieval and early modern literature has led to an extraordinary publication record including 135 books and more than 850 articles on topics ranging from comparative literature and cultural history to gender and environmental studies. Some of his works have reached wider audiences, such as The Medieval Chastity Belt (2007), which sparked significant discussion, and his Handbook of Medieval Studies (2010) and Handbook of Medieval Culture (2015), now indispensable references. More recently, he has continued to inspire with publications like Criticism of the Court and the Evil King in Medieval Literature (2024) as well as his English translation of Georg Wickram’s Rollwagenbüchlein (2025).
He serves as editor for Humanities, Mediaevistik, and Current Research Journal of Social Sciences, and has edited the Fundamentals of Medieval and Early Modern Culture series with Walter de Gruyter since 2005.
Classen has received the Five Star Faculty Award (2009), the Carnegie Foundation Arizona Professor of the Year Award (2012), and the Outstanding Advising Award (2016). His contributions have earned major honors, including the Bundesverdienstkreuz am Band (2004) and the title of Grand Knight Commander of the Most Noble Order of the Three Lions (2017).
Beyond academia, he is also an accomplished poet and writer of short prose, with 15 books of poetry and 5 volumes of satirical prose narratives, demonstrating that scholarship and creativity can thrive side by side.
