Traffic Flow Optimization
Edit

Traffic flow optimization is the mathematical and control-theoretic problem of determining traffic signal timings, ramp metering rates, lane assignments, and variable speed limits that maximize roadway throughput, minimize average travel time, and reduce congestion on a transportation network. The problem is formulated on the basis of macroscopic traffic flow theory, which models traffic as a compressible continuum governed by conservation of vehicles and a fundamental diagram relating flow, density, and speed [1]. The Lighthill-Whitham-Richards model describes the evolution of density and flow over space and time through a nonlinear partial differential equation, and the optimization objective is to find control inputs that minimize total network travel delay while respecting capacity constraints, queue storage limits, and signal-cycle constraints. At the microscopic level, car-following models represent individual vehicle dynamics through response to lead-vehicle speed and spacing, forming the basis for adaptive cruise control and intersection management algorithms. The optimization may be solved through dynamic programming, model predictive control, queue-theoretic approximations, or metaheuristic search, depending on the network scale and real-time computation requirements [2]. The conceptual framework treats the traffic network as a controlled distributed system whose state evolves through nonlinear flow dynamics and whose performance is measured by total delay, travel time reliability, and fuel consumption [3].
