As a young boy growing up in Bucundura, Kabale in western Uganda, Wilberforce Tushemereirwe witnessed rampant illness and death of fellow children. He attended the first burial ceremony in 1968 at the age of 10! Several years later, as head of Uganda's Banana Research Program, Tush learned that he and his childhood friends had suffered from Vitamin-A deficiency which manifested in rampant illness. He then set out to find a solution which was to biofortify his staple food - matooke. Finally, when success when realized, naysayers pounced and influenced politicians to reject this new crop variety. But the boy from Kabale, soldiers on, never giving up, hopeful that one day Africa's children will eat this Vitamin-A rich banana and resistant common illnesses that keep them from school or even cause death in extreme cases.
