Imagine that you are walking in the street and suddenly step on a small hard stone. Unbearable pain is transmitted from the sole of your foot to your whole body. The first word that comes out of your mouth will probably be ”ouch!”. Then, what comes next? It is most likely: “Fucking stone!” You may continue to swear like a trooper for an instant even though you do not know what is to blame. Though we may be ashamed of this reaction, strangely, pain always results in swearing as if it can reduce the pain. So what is the truth?
