Video Introduction

Some people believe that swallowing a sword is a form of magic. After all, like with most magic, swallowing a sword does not seem to be something that should be possible. It is easier to accept the idea that this is all an illusion than to believe that a person can guide a long piece of metal all the way to his or her gut.

However, sword swallowing is a special performance skill in which the performer passes the sword through the mouth, down the esophagus and into the stomach. This feat is not swallowing in the traditional sense, but the performer needs to keep the mouth-to-stomach passage open for the sword. [1]
