This video pictorially summarises the key terminology associated with subsurface inspection of historic masonry tunnel structures. What follows is a short animation on how a void can nucleate undetected behind a tunnel wall and, over time, grow to a point the surrounding masonry becomes weakened to a point of full delamination (i.e. partial structural collapse).
