Peat fires were accidentally ignited in a degraded peatland area near Tumbang Nusa in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Authors used this opportunity to empirically measure peat burnt. The greatest reduction in the surface depth was observed in the first week (loss of up to 15 cm), About 3 cm was lost in the week two and less than 1 cm in the last days of measurements. They conclude that over almost a month of smoldering peat fires, a total of 21-24 cm surface was lost. Finally, recovery of carbon to initial land cover shrubs by new growth was found two years after fires.
