The research focused on 2 major environmental events in recent history that have impacted ocular health. These events are 1) The Ohio train derailment and toxic spill and 2) Military burn pits. New data will be presented based on in silico analysis. This will provide evidence of a between acute and subacute environmental events and long-term damage to the surface of the eye. In most environmental disasters, the focus of the research and clinical community has been on the relationship between toxic exposure and various forms of cancer or pulmonary disease. It is easy to understand why research and public attention focus on more serious diseases when compared to dry eyes. Cancer and lung disease can cause premature death while dry eye syndrome does not fall in this category. More insidious but important disease categories such as dry eyes tend to be overlooked. This video will attempt to demonstrate the enormous personal and economic consequences of dry eye disease as it relates to specific toxic environmental exposures. New ocular toxicology data are presented for two such events. This will demonstrate the utility of using easily accessible proven scientific measurements to determine the trajectory and significance of toxic exposures that will undoubtedly occur in the future. This will hopefully provide a path where individuals exposed to surface ocular toxins can be carefully followed for the development of chronic ocular surface disease or dry eye.
