Prostate cancer is one of the commonest cancers in the world and many of the men diagnosed with this type of cancer will be treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for their disease, as ADT is a mainstay treatment. However, ADT deprives the body and brain of androgens which play multiple roles in supporting the optimal functioning of organ systems. This results in many side effects including accelerated loss of muscle mass, an increase in fat mass, reduced insulin sensitivity and an increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. ADT can lead to erectile dysfunction, depressed mood and cognitive decline. This video summarizes the quality of life issues associated with ADT.
