Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Farid Mohd Sharif is a Malaysian scholar specialising in Islamic thought and contemporary Muslim issues. Educated at the Universiti Malaya, he later earned his PhD in Islamic Studies from the renowned Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES), University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2006. Buddhist Moral Formation and Contemporary Education: A Hermeneutic Analysis of Pure Land Buddhism examines the educational significance of Pure Land Buddhism through the perspective of philosophical hermeneutics. The entry explores how the central Pure Land concepts of faith (xin), aspiration (yuan), and practice (xing) constitute an interconnected process of moral formation that shapes ethical understanding, personal commitment, and everyday conduct. Rather than treating Pure Land Buddhism solely as a devotional or doctrinal tradition, the entry considers its broader educational and humanistic dimensions and discusses its relevance to contemporary debates on moral education, character formation, moral identity, and human flourishing. Drawing upon classical Buddhist texts and contemporary educational philosophy, the entry explains how hermeneutic interpretation enables traditional religious concepts to be understood within modern educational contexts while preserving their historical and philosophical meanings. It also examines the relationship between Buddhist moral cultivation and current approaches to character education, virtue ethics, care ethics, and intercultural education.
