Language Ideologies

Edit

Language ideologies are socially shared or contested beliefs, assumptions, and values about language, linguistic varieties, and their relationships with social groups, cultural practices, and power structures [1][2]. They shape how linguistic forms are evaluated, how speakers are categorized, and how particular ways of speaking become associated with legitimacy, prestige, correctness, or social stigma [1][2]. In linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics, language ideologies are analyzed as culturally situated frameworks that influence language practices, language policy, and the reproduction or negotiation of social distinctions.
