Language Identity

Edit

Language identity refers to the ways individuals and groups understand, express, and negotiate their identities through language use and their relationships with particular languages, dialects, accents, and linguistic practices [1][2]. It encompasses the associations between linguistic choices and social affiliations, including ethnicity, nationality, community membership, and other dimensions of social belonging, as well as the ways speakers position themselves and are positioned by others through language [1][2]. Language identity is examined in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology as a dynamic process shaped by social interaction, cultural context, and language ideologies.
