Chinese Script Systems

Edit

Chinese script systems are writing systems that use Chinese characters and related graphic conventions to represent linguistic units in written language. The core Chinese writing system employs characters whose structures may combine semantic and phonetic components; the relationship between a character and spoken language is therefore not equivalent to a one-letter-to-one-sound correspondence in alphabetic writing [1]. The term can also encompass character-based systems adapted to represent other Sinitic varieties and non-Sinitic languages, as well as transcription and romanization systems used to represent Chinese speech through other scripts [1][2]. Within this broader category, traditional and simplified Chinese characters are graphic forms within the Chinese writing system, whereas romanization systems use alphabetic symbols and constitute a distinct means of representing Chinese pronunciation [2].
