Orality

Edit

Orality is the mode of language and communication in which spoken utterance is the primary medium for producing, transmitting, and interpreting verbal discourse, as distinct from written language, which relies on graphic representation [1]. In linguistic and cultural studies, the concept also refers to the communicative practices and discourse characteristics associated with spoken communication, including the roles of speaker, listener, interactional context, and performance in the organization and interpretation of verbal expression [1]. Orality is therefore distinct from literacy as a mode of communication, although oral and written practices may coexist and interact within the same social and cultural context [1].
