Carbon Cloth
Edit

Carbon cloth is a woven textile of continuous carbon fibres that serves simultaneously as current collector, mechanical support and active-material host in an electrochemical electrode. Its conductivity along the fibre direction, its open porosity and its tolerance of bending are what distinguish it from a metal foil, and thermal activation that opens the fibre surface and delaminates it increases the double-layer capacitance of the bare cloth [1]. Because the fibres are already conductive, an active phase can be grown directly on them: manganese dioxide nanorods grown hydrothermally give a binder-free electrode whose performance is not diluted by an insulating additive [2]. The same argument applies to ternary sulphides, where the array morphology grown in situ sets both the accessible area and the transport path [3]. Cobalt-manganese oxide and hydroxide nanostructures follow the same design [4]. Assembling two electrodes with different storage mechanisms into one device gives a cell whose voltage exceeds that of a symmetrical pair [5].
