Satellite Remote Sensing
Edit

Satellite remote sensing is the acquisition of information about the Earth’s surface and environment by sensors carried on Earth-observing satellites. It provides systematic observations over the Earth’s surface and can collect data at different spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions [1][2]. Satellite remote sensing encompasses observations using different sensor technologies, including optical, hyperspectral, radar, and lidar systems, and the resulting data can be used to monitor atmospheric conditions, land-cover and land-use dynamics, vegetation, ice, water, and other environmental variables [2][3]. Within the broader field of remote sensing, the defining characteristic of satellite remote sensing is therefore the use of spaceborne rather than airborne or terrestrial observation platforms [4]. While aerial systems offer higher spatial resolution and on-demand flight timing, satellite platforms excel at providing consistent, standardized time-series data essential for observing broad Earth system processes.
