Thesaurus Development
Edit

Thesaurus development is the systematic process of designing, constructing, and maintaining a controlled vocabulary structure in which lexical units are organized according to semantic relationships, conceptual categories, and standardized representational principles. Within lexicography and language studies, the concept involves the identification, selection, definition, and arrangement of terms, together with the establishment of relationships such as equivalence, hierarchy, and association among concepts expressed by those terms [1]. A thesaurus differs from a general dictionary or synonym list by emphasizing structured relationships among lexical concepts rather than providing only definitions or lists of synonymous expressions [2]. Thesaurus development therefore includes the formulation of terminological principles, the organization of descriptors and non-descriptors, and the specification of semantic networks that represent relationships within a vocabulary system [3]. The process is concerned with the creation of a coherent lexical and conceptual framework for representing language units, distinguishing it from unstructured vocabulary compilation or ordinary lexical description [4].
