Dr. Shahadat Hussain (ORCID: 0000-0002-4355-2169) is an Advanced Materials Engineer and Senior Researcher currently based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He serves as a Research Associate within the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD). Dr. Hussain is recognized for his multidisciplinary approach to materials science, blending computational design, advanced manufacturing, and experimental characterization to develop the next generation of high-performance architected metamaterials and smart alloys. His professional body of work is extensively documented across international scholarly databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus Author ID, Web of Science ResearcherID, ResearchGate, and LinkedIn. He is also identified by the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI: 0000 0005 3020 7229) and Wikidata (Q138333037).

Academic Journey and Professional Career

Dr. Hussain’s academic foundation began with a deep focus on the metallurgy of thermo-responsive materials. He earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Technology in 2019 from the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) at CSIR-AMPRI, India. His doctoral research was pivotal in developing copper-based shape memory alloys, providing insights into their thermal and mechanical reliability.

Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Hussain moved to the United Arab Emirates, joining Khalifa University as a Postdoctoral Fellow (2020–2024). During this tenure, he spearheaded critical research into the additive manufacturing of Nitinol (NiTi) structures. His work specifically addressed the challenges of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), such as managing residual stresses and mitigating intergranular crack formation in complex geometries. In 2024, he joined NYU Abu Dhabi, where he continues to push the boundaries of materials engineering through the study of Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) lattices.

Research Interests and Technical Expertise

Dr. Hussain’s research is at the forefront of "Industry 4.0" in materials science, characterized by the following core pillars:

  • TPMS Metamaterials: He specializes in the design of architected lattices, including Schwarz Primitive, Schoen Gyroid, and Diamond structures. His research explores how these mathematically defined surfaces can be optimized for high strength-to-weight ratios and enhanced energy absorption, which are vital for aerospace components and orthopedic implants.

  • Smart and Functional Alloys: A significant portion of his work involves investigating the phase transformation behavior of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs). By controlling the microstructural evolution during 3D printing, he seeks to create "4D printed" components that can change shape or properties in response to external stimuli.

  • Advanced Manufacturing & Process Optimization: Dr. Hussain possesses extensive expertise in LPBF and Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). His research focuses on the "process-structure-property" relationship, ensuring that the finished product meets the rigorous mechanical standards required for industrial use.

  • Scientific Computing & Data Science: Bridging the gap between traditional engineering and modern data science, he utilizes Python, MATLAB, and Machine Learning algorithms to predict material behavior and automate the analysis of complex experimental data.

Professional Contributions and Recognition

Dr. Hussain has authored over 15 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals such as Materials & Design, Journal of Manufacturing Processes, and Materials. He is a dedicated contributor to the scientific community, serving as a peer reviewer for more than 15 international journals and sharing technical code via GitHub. His commitment to excellence is further evidenced by certifications in Data Science and Machine Learning from Stanford University, IBM, and Google.
