Video Introduction

This online seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Piergiorgio Messa. He introduced the three speakers and later moderated the Q&A and discussion session.

The first speaker was Prof. Dr. Francesca Mallamaci,  gave a talk entitled “Salt intake reduction in the treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease and Hypertension. Prof. Dr. Markus Ketteler, was the second speaker. The topic he introduced was to do with magnesium dietary intake in CKD. The third speaker was Prof. Dr. Peter Stenvinkel, his presentation was entitled “Food as medicine – could it be implemented in chronic kidney disease?”

The details of the experts:

Prof. Dr. Piergiorgio Messa is a full professor of Nephrology at the Università degli Studi di Milano, Piergiorgio Messa is the Director of the Nephrology, Dialysis, and Renal Transplant Unit at the Policlinico of Milan (Italy).

He is the incoming President of the Italian Society of Nephrology. His main fields of clinical and research interest are: kidney transplantation, clinical nephrology, CKD-MBD, acid-base and electrolyte disturbances. He is in the Editorial board of many Journals (NDT, Nutrients, JN, BP, et.). Mentioned among the "Top Italian Scientists", he published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers (344 of which present in PubMed) and more than 20 book chapters (HI 47 according to Scopus, 55 according to GoogleScholar).

Prof. Dr. Francesca Mallamaci is the chief of the Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Renal Transplantation, in Reggio Cal, Italy. Head of the Hypertension Unit (European Society of Hypertension Excellence Center). Chair Woman of the ERA-EDTA Working Group EURECAm. Research Supervisor at the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the National Research Council (CNR). Section of Epidemiology and Physiopathology of Renal Diseases and Hypertension of Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Prof. Dr. Markus Ketteler is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Department of General Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Robert-Bosch Krankenhaus in Stuttgart, Germany. Professor Ketteler’s main research interests include the pathological mechanisms involved in extraosseous calcifications, phosphate and vitamin D metabolism in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD), and he has served as principal investigator in several clinical multicentre trials in the CKD-MBD field. He has served as a council member and Chair of the administrative office of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) between 2009 and 2018, and he was elected to represent the ERA-EDTA on the board of directors of the Kidney Health Initiative 2017–2019. Professor Ketteler was also a member of the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) CKD-MBD Guideline Working Group 2006–2009, was appointed as Co-chair for the KDIGO CKD-MBD Guideline Update 2015–2017 and served as Co-chair of the KDIGO Controversies Conference on CKD-MBD in 2013. For the period of 2020 – 2022, he was elected as a member of the KDIGO Executive Committee. He also co-led the German Calciphylaxis Registry and is a current Theme Editor and editorial board member of Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. Professor Ketteler has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Prof. Dr. Peter Stenvinkel serves as a professor and senior lecturer at Dept. of Renal Medicine Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. He has published about 550 original publications and reviews and 30 book chapters on various aspects of inflammation, wasting and metabolism in chronic kidney disease patients. His Hirsch index is 85 according to PubMed. He has given more than 400 invited lectures at various international meetings and congresses in about 30 different countries. He has received prize for the best Swedish thesis in diabetology 1994 and was a Baxter Extramural Grant awardee 1996. He was a Karolina Price awardee 2005 and a Vizenca price awardee 2009. He received the Addis Gold medal by the ISRNM for nutritional research 2010. He is a member of the council of International Society of Nephrology (2007-) and ERA-EDTA (2007-2010). He is an associate Editor of NDT and was editor-in-chief on NDT-E 2010-2013. He received an honorary membership of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology 2010 and of the Polish Society of Nephrology in 2012. He was an international NKF awardee 2012. He is a fellow of ERA-EDTA and ASN.
