The circulation is a closed system that has been assumed to be free from bacteria, but evidence for the existence of a low-density blood microbiota is accumulating. A diverse microbiota was observed in the blood samples. Regardless of the type of disease, the alpha diversity of the microbiota was positively associated with C-reactive protein (CRP). The blood microbiota had a surprisingly high proportion of Proteobacteria in comparison with human oral and colonic microbiotas.
