Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction: History
Please note this is an old version of this entry, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Magnetic solid phase extraction is a sample preparation procedure in which a magnetic sorbent is dispersed in a liquid sample, allowed to take up the target analytes, and then separated from the liquid with an external magnet instead of by filtration or centrifugation. The sorbent is usually an iron oxide core coated with a phase that does the actual retaining, so the selectivity comes from the coating while the separation comes from the core [1]; covalent triazine frameworks grown on a cobalt ferrite have been examined for this [2]. The procedure has been taken up for natural products, where the matrix is complex and the analytes are present at trace level [3]. Determining steroid estrogens in fish tissue shows the combination with liquid chromatography [4]. Dispersing the sorbent without a separate conditioning step shortens the procedure, and dispersive variants of the technique recover synthetic phosphodiesterase inhibitors from a complex matrix [5].
