The magnesium depletion score (MDS) is a noninvasive composite index designed to identify individuals at increased risk of magnesium deficiency or inadequacy. The score incorporates current diuretic use, proton pump inhibitor use, heavy alcohol consumption, and reduced kidney function—factors that can impair magnesium absorption, retention, or excretion. Higher MDS values have been associated with lower dietary magnesium intake and an increased risk of adverse health outcomes, particularly cardiovascular disease and mortality.
