So what happens when you get bitten by a mosquito and get infected? The virus obviously enters the body and replicates, but for some unknown reason, despite it doing that, only a small proportion, roughly one-fifth or 20%, go on to develop illness. What are the symptoms? The symptoms are varied, but one of the most common is joint pain and a skin rash. What are the complications of having the virus? Some more serious ones, including that which occurs during pregnancy, where the virus invades the developing foetus and causes, particularly, brain damage, but it also seems to be able to set off the Guillain-Barré syndrome.
