Hemodialysis patients encounter not only physical challenges but also psychological difficulties and distress. Research beyond nephrology has demonstrated that incorporating spirituality into patient care can enhance well-being and improve coping with the hardships of illness and treatment.
Studies have highlighted the role of spirituality for individuals with mental disorders and chronic pain. While spirituality encompasses more than just religion, the literature connecting spirituality and nephrology remains limited. Some observational studies have examined how spirituality influences life satisfaction and quality of life for hemodialysis patients, indicating that integrating spirituality into care may help alleviate depressive symptoms and enhance overall quality of life.
Most existing studies have been conducted in the United States and Canada, often within specific religious contexts, leaving a gap in qualitative research. Thus, the question of whether hemodialysis patients in a European setting, such as Switzerland, share similar spiritual needs remains unanswered. This qualitative study aims to explore the spiritual expectations of hemodialysis patients at the Dialysis Center of the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV).
