Orthogeriatrics: History Edit
Subjects: Others

Orthogeriatrics is a subspecialty of the Geriatric Medicine developed in response to clinical, social and financial needs in the management of patients with fragility fractures.  Orthogeriatric is a muldidisciplinary approach to improve the appropriate management of the patient journey (i.e from hospitalization because of hip fracture, to surgical theathre, to rehab pathway to recovery previous functional abilities and independence). Orthogeriatric models of care are well established for people hospitalized after hip fractures, but rising evidence support their implementation for all older people hospitalized because of major fracture.

Current evidence are still rising about the effectiveness of this model of care The current best practice encompasses the patient's care from arriving at the hospital through to discharge and involves the whole multidisciplinary team. The care provided aims to be holistic and to include secondary prevention of fractures as well as acute care.
