Mare’s Eggs

Mare’s Eggs is the common name for Nostoc pruniforme, a species of cyanobacteria that forms large, gelatinous, ball-like colonies in freshwater environments. These colonies resemble greenish, translucent eggs, often reaching several centimeters in diameter. Nostoc pruniforme is notable for its nitrogen-fixing ability and its ecological role in nutrient cycling in aquatic systems.
