In this review a brief overview about the advances in the experimental field on the treatment of early stages of diabetic retinopathy (ESDR), as well as the main gaps to be filled will be given. In addition, a critical view on the current clinical practice for treating advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy (ASDR) will be provided.
