Phraseology: History
Please note this is an old version of this entry, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Phraseology is a branch of linguistics concerned with the study of conventional word combinations and phraseological units, including their lexical, semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic properties [1]. Phraseological units encompass recurring combinations of words whose conventionality, degree of fixedness, or meaning distinguishes them from freely formed expressions; they include collocations, idioms, and formulaic expressions, although the precise scope of the category varies across theoretical approaches [1][2]. Phraseology examines both the properties of individual multiword expressions and the patterns governing their occurrence and organization within a language, distinguishing conventionalized combinations from combinations generated freely according to grammatical rules [2].
