English Speaker: History
Please note this is an old version of this entry, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

An English speaker is an individual who uses English as a means of oral communication, regardless of whether English is their first, additional, or learned language [1]. In linguistics and sociolinguistics, the term encompasses speakers with differing levels of proficiency, language-learning backgrounds, and patterns of use across social and regional contexts. It is broader than native English speaker, which refers specifically to an individual who acquired English as a first language during early language development; it does not, by itself, specify nativeness, proficiency level, or national identity [1].
