Bimetallic Catalyst: History
Please note this is an old version of this entry, which may differ significantly from the current revision.
Contributor: Jack Zhong

A bimetallic catalyst contains two metals in the same active entity, and its interest lies in the fact that its activity or selectivity is not the sum of what the two metals give separately. The effect was recognised early in reforming catalysts, where adding a second metal to platinum changed the dehydrogenation behaviour and the resistance to deactivation together [1]. Pairing gold with palladium in a supported particle changes the oxidation of benzyl alcohol beyond what either metal achieves alone, and the effect is traced to a change in the electronic structure of the diluting metal [2]. Spreading a second metal over an oxide support that itself takes part in the reaction extends the same idea to oxide-metal pairs [3]. At the extreme of dilution the minor metal becomes isolated on a host, and a platinum-cobalt pair on ceria with one-to-one stoichiometry gives a well-defined geometry for studying the interaction [4]. Oxide pairs behave similarly outside the noble metals: a vanadium-cerium combination oxidises with a solvent-dependent outcome [5].
