Subjects: Psychology

Psychosocial development encompasses changes in individuals’ psychological functioning, personality, identity, social relationships, and capacity to participate in social environments across the lifespan [1][2]. It reflects the interaction between individual development and the social, cultural, and interpersonal contexts in which development occurs [3]. The concept includes the development of self-concept, autonomy, competence, identity, intimacy, social roles, and relationships, with different developmental periods involving changing psychological and social demands. Erikson’s psychosocial theory conceptualizes development as a sequence of stages in which individuals encounter age-related psychosocial challenges, such as trust versus mistrust, identity versus role confusion, and integrity versus despair [4]. Later experiences and social environments can influence how earlier developmental challenges are understood and resolved. Psychosocial development therefore describes the ongoing interplay between psychological maturation and social experience through which individuals develop a sense of self and increasingly complex ways of relating to others and society.
