1. Introduction

Hiep-Hung Pham is a Hanoi-based senior research fellow and consultant in education. He earned his PhD in International Business Administration from Chinese Culture University, Taiwan ROC, in 2018. He is currently Director of Institute for Research on Education and Knowledge Transfer (REK Institute), Thanh Do University. Additionally, he is the Founder and Head Coach of Research Coach in Social Sciences, a training and consultation program supporting early-career researchers.

Dr. Pham has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in SSCI, ESCI, and Scopus-indexed journals. His research interests include international education, education reform, and research policy.

In 2021, along with Dr. Daniel Balsalobre-Lorente (University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain) and Dr. Huynh Luu Duc Toan (Queen Mary University of London, UK), Dr. Hiep-Hung Pham was appointed as the co-editor (in chief) of Evaluation Review (ISSN: 0193-841X, SSCI, Scopus). With this appointment, he became the first ever Vietnam-based Vietnamese citizen to become chief editor of a SSCI journal.

Besides, he also serves on the editorial boards of several international and national journals, such as Journal of Research in Innovative Teaching & Learning (Scopus Q1), , European Journal of Education (SSCI, Higher Education, Skills and Work-Based Learning (SSCI).

In 2022, he won the Outstanding Faculty for Internationalization Award awarded by Comparative and International Education Society CIES, The Study Abroad and International Student SAIS.

21. Education

Pham began his higher education by pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies in Physics at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-HN), and Université Paris-Sud 11, France between 2002 and 2007. He later pursued a PhD in International Business Administration at Chinese Culture University, Taiwan ROC (2012–2017). During his PhD, he became actively involved in interdisciplinary research, particularly in education studies. His doctoral dissertation applies theories from the field of marketing to international education[1].

In 2013, Dr. Hung-Hiep Pham received the Endeavour Research Fellowship to conduct research at the University of Melbourne’s Center for Studies in Higher Education, under the supervision of Professor Simon Marginson. Since then, his research orientation has primarily focused on higher education.

32. Career

Pham's academic trajectory shifted towards education research and training, leading to the establishment of Research Coach in Social Sciences in 2017, a program designed to support early-career researchers in academic publishing. His exposure to different education models in Vietnam, France, and Taiwan contributed to his comparative approach to education research.

His career has since focused on international education, education policy, and research publication practices. His work integrates quantitative and qualitative methodologies, applying insights from both the natural and social sciences to address challenges in higher education.His key roles include teaching and coaching, publishing books and textbooks, contributing editorial and publishing work, and providing policy consulting.

32.1. Teaching and Coaching

Dr. Pham is currently a lecturer at Thanh Do University, Hanoi, and a visiting lecturer at Vietnam–Japan University, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. While Pham Hung Hiep has not held a full-time academic position for a long time, he has been extensively engaged in private teaching and coaching, with over ten years of experience offering outsourced courses for various universities. He also took on supervision role, supervising PhD students in global human development, business, and social sciences.

In 2017, he founded the Research Coach in Social Sciences, providing research training for more than 2000 early-career researchers. The service revolves around two main pillars: training and coaching. The initiative has since provided training to over 2,000 individuals, of whom 150 have successfully published research in journals indexed by SSCI or Scopus. Additionally, nearly 200 participants have secured scholarships to pursue master's and doctoral studies at prestigious institutions both domestically and internationally.

Pham’s teaching and coaching philosophy focuses on nurturing academic independence and promoting research excellence, with micro-teaching and micro-research serving as the core approach[2]. In addition, he has created and sustained a vibrant academic community consisting of his associates and students, where members regularly engage in mutual support and scholarly discussions. He also organizes seminars and workshops on a regular basis to enrich this community’s academic experience.

32.2. Book and Textbook

Dr. Pham is a pioneer and innovator in developing and publishing textbooks on social science research methods and issues. Together with his colleagues, he published A Step-by-Step Introduction to Social Sciences Research (Từng bước nhập môn Nghiên cứu Khoa học Xã hội) in 2022. The book quickly gained popularity domestically, thanks to its innovative microlearning approach. It presents short, concise lessons in under two pages, structured systematically from basic to advanced research skills. It also includes updated knowledge and skills related to publishing, and features a vibrant, visually appealing cover design that distinguishes it from other Vietnamese textbooks.

Since then, Dr. Pham and colleagues have published 3 books using the same approach: A Step-by-Step Guide to Use Bibliometrics for Literature Review (Từng bước thực hành phương pháp Thư mục lượng để làm Tổng quan tài liệu, 2024), A Step-by-Step Introduction to Quantitative Research in Social Sciences (Từng bước nhập môn Nghiên cứu định lượng trong Khoa học xã hội, 2025) and A Step-by-Step Guide to Practice Structural Equation Modeling Method (2025). These books have revolutionized the textbook market in Vietnam, as mostly filled with translated materials from foreign countries, or written in an old-fashioned way.

32.3. Editorial and Publishing Work

Dr. Pham is a prolific researcher with a strong focus on international education[3], educational technology (edtech)[4], and science policy[5]. His work spans numerous aspects of higher education, including international student mobility, online learning, and the development of educational frameworks. He has collaborated with leading scholars in the field, including co-authoring chapters with Professor Ly Tran in Internationalisation in Vietnamese Higher Education (2018), and contributing a chapter to Professor Simon Marginson’s edited volume Higher Education in Vietnam: The Need for a New Roadmap (2023).

Drawing on his extensive experience, Dr. Pham has also been invited to serve as an editor for several prestigious journals. In 2021, Dr. Pham became the first Vietnamese scholar residing in Vietnam to serve as Co-Chief Editor of Evaluation Review (SSCI JIF 3.0).

Beyond academia, Pham frequently consults for governmental and international organizations to conduct policy analysis, including:

43. Mass Media Engagement

Pham Hung Hiep is widely regarded as an expert in the field of education and policy, and his insights are regularly sought by mass media platforms both in Vietnam and internationally. His expertise in higher education reform, international student mobility, and education policy makes him a valuable source for media outlets looking to provide authoritative commentary on these topics.

In addition to his media appearances, Pham is also a frequent columnist and commentator, contributing articles to a variety of local and international publications. Pham’s voice has been featured in numerous prestigious platforms, including University World News[6], Financial Times[7], and Nature Index[8], and garnered attention from policymakers, academics, and the public. His op-ed pieces cover a broad range of topics, including contemporary issues in business, higher education, science, and policy, offering critical perspectives and innovative solutions. Domestically, his writing has appeared in respected outlets like Vietnamnet, Zing, Giaoduc.net, VNExpress, and Khoa hoc & Phat trien, among others. Through his consistent media engagement, Pham has established himself as a thought leader whose expertise is trusted by both media organizations and the broader academic and policy communities. His influence in shaping public discourse, particularly in the realm of education policy, continues to grow as he contributes to critical discussions about the future of education in Vietnam and beyond.

54. Open Science and Communication

Dr. Pham Hung-Hiep is an enthusiastic supporter of open science and open education. One of his most significant contributions is his participation in the first handbook on open knowledge in Vietnam, "Handbook of Open Education and Open Science: A Guideline for Lecturers and Researchers," (Giáo dục và Khoa học mở: Cẩm nang hướng dẫn cho giảng viên và nhà nghiên cứu) (co-edited with three other colleagues) which examines the academic landscape of openness and provides readers with the necessary tools to engage in open movements and utilize open resources. The book was published in January 2024 and has already been used as a reference in the undergraduate programs of the Faculty of Library and Information Science at the University of Humanities and Social Sciences (Vietnam National University - Hanoi) and the Faculty of Education Studies at Thanh Do University.

He was featured in numerous media outlets domestically and internationally to discuss the significance of open movements and the methods for implementing them in a developing country such as Vietnam. His notable contribution was the piece “How to move open science from the periphery to the centre” featured in University World News in 2022.

Since 2019, he has also been a member of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) chapter in Vietnam (chair since 2022), an association that is renowned for its advocacy of open science. As the chair of the Vietnamese Chapter, he has organized numerous workshops and seminars to disseminate the use of open practices, participating in translating important documents. Notably, Dr. Pham served as the host of the "Advancing Science in Southeast Asia Web Conference 2021" in Vietnam, which was organized by the International Science Council Asia Pacific and the Southeast Asian Network for Open Science.

In terms of academic practices, Dr. Pham is a prolific author in Vietnam's education science scene. Among more than 50 publications, there is a significant number of open-access articles, including publications that discuss the open practices themselves, such as the adoption of MOOCs by Vietnamese students and the development of an open database that tracks the productivity of Vietnamese researchers. He also fervently advocates for open data, having published numerous articles in quality data journals.

He initiated and presently leads two projects promoting open science and open education. One is an open textbook website, a collaboration with Thanh Do University. The second is a science news forum, namely ADuBiz (Academic and eDucation Biz), which is focused on education and academic publishing, with a section dedicated to open science and open education. The website is inspired by the famous The Scholarly Kitchen.
